Sister Sledge Fights for Digital Royalties
February 7, 2012 | Leave a Comment
R&B group Sister Sledge has launched a court battle in a bid to secure lost revenue from digital music sales. The group, known for the hit “We Are Family,” has joined with Oscar-nominated actress-songwriter Ronee Blakley to sue Warner Music Group, claiming they’re owed millions of dollars in unpaid royalties.
In their lawsuit, filed on Thursday, the artists claim they have lost revenue due to calculations based on sales rather than licenses. The stars’ complaint states, “Rather than paying its recording artists and producers the percentage of net receipts it received — and continues to receive – from digital content providers for ‘licenses,’ Warner wrongfully treats each digital download as a ‘sale’ of a physical phonorecord … which are governed by much lower royalty provisions than ‘licenses’ in Warner’s standard recording agreements.”
Sister Sledge’s suit, first obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, comes after rapper Eminem won a 2010 appeals court decision and set a legal precedent entitling copyright holders to half of the revenue from digital sales.
British rocker Peter Frampton and the administrators of late funk legend Rick James’ estate have since filed similar claims.

GQ Names Chris Brown World’s Worst-Dressed Man
February 7, 2012 | Leave a Comment
Look at him now. Well, maybe not. That is if you ask British GQ, who just named singer Chris Brown as the “Worst-Dressed Man” in the world. Yes, the whole entire world. The pub writes, “For someone who seems to have so much disposable income—he boasts on one track about spending “15 grand on a phone” and charged over $500 for meet-and-greets on his last tour—Brown seems utterly adverse to investing in tailoring, combining the worst excesses of XXL sizing with a penchant for deeply unflattering costumes.”
The same list dubbed hometown superstar Tinie Tempah as Best-Dressed. GQ writes, “Finally, while we don’t like to blow our own trumpet too much, we should point out that, for the moment, the man who heads our list of the ten best-dressed international men calls this country home. Can it be a coincidence?”
Chris will have a chance to prove GQ wrong (or maybe right) on the red carpet at the upcoming NAACP Image Awards. The singer nabbed a nomination for Outstanding Male Artist and Outstanding Album for FAME. The winners will be announced live February 17 on NBC.

Brandy and Monica’s ‘It All Belongs to Me’: Singers Offer ‘Boy Is Mine’ Sequel
February 7, 2012 | Leave a Comment
What a difference 14 years make. Back in 1998, Brandy and Monica went head to head on ‘The Boy Is Mine,’ their chart-topping hit about two gals competing for one (very lucky) dude’s affections. Now, we finally have the sequel, ‘It All Belongs to Me,” and the R&B divas are rivals no longer. They’ve been burned by their fellas, and they they’re not shy about showing some sisterly solidarity and standing up for themselves.
“You must be tripping/ You must be crazy/ To think I’m gonna let you off that easy,” they sing, later telling their men-folk to give back all the fancy stuff — including their Macbooks — they bought for them.
“It’s a very soulful R&B song with pop sensibilities,” producer Rico Love said. “I wanted to make sure I made it a classic R&B record, but I definitely wanted to make sure that it had enough appeal to cross over and become a Top 40 record.”
While collaborations between singers sometimes lead to ego battles and bad blood, Brandy told Rap-Up that she was thrilled to get back in the studio with her former duet partner.
“This business is all about competition,” she said. “They forgot about what is the most important, which is two talents coming together. It’s just great to come back and do something with [Monica]. This is definitely a blessing.”
Will.i.am Says Star-Studded Album is Dream Come True

Rapper will.i.am is set to thrill fans with superstar collaborations on his new solo album after teaming up with Britney Spears and Shakira.
The Black Eyed Peas frontman has also recruited Alicia Keys, LMFAO and Busta Rhymes for “#willpower,” which is due for release later this year. Mick Jagger and Jennifer Lopez also contributed vocals to “T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever),” the first single off “#willpower.”
Discussing the project, will.i.am tells U.K. radio station Capital FM, “I have a song with Alicia Keys – me, Alicia and (house music group) Swedish House Mafia. Me and Shakira have been trying to finish the stuff we started, and me and Britney is really crazy. So we got a song with me, LMFAO and Eva Simons. A song with me and Busta Rhymes and Swizz Beatz. I got a whole other bunch of collaborations.”
The hip-hop star say star-studded disc is a dream come true, adding, “‘#willpower’ is just a reminder to myself of staying (a) contestant with the dream – keeping the dream alive. It was all a dream when I was 15 years old; 20 years later, I managed to take the dream from an idea to physicality. So ‘#willpower’ is uplifting songs, encouragement for those that need it.”

Who Wants to Sign Up For Beyonce-ology?

Hip-hop fans can now study Beyonce, thanks to a new course at America’s Rutgers University. Lecturer Kevin Allred has signed up to teach “Politicizing Beyonce” as part of the school’s Women’s and Gender Studies curriculum.
The class offers New Jersey students the chance to watch the pop star’s music videos and explore how the “Single Ladies” hitmaker’s image and music has impacted the world.
An overview of the course on the university’s website reads, “The performer’s music and career are used as lenses to explore American race, gender, and sexual politics… Course topics include the extent of Beyonce’ s control over her own aesthetic, whether her often half-naked body is empowered or stereotypical, and her more racy performances as her alter ego, Sasha Fierce.”
The course includes class discussions, which “often lead to other vocalists, including Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Lady Gaga and contemporary musicians who embrace the soul singing tradition like Adele and the late Amy Winehouse.”
Beyonce’s husband is also the subject of his own higher education course: Georgetown University is currently offering students the chance to take the “Sociology of Hip-Hop: Jay-Z.”

Ne-Yo Lands Executive Job at Motown
January 30, 2012 | Leave a Comment
R&B star Ne-Yo has begun his search to discover the next music superstar as a new top executive at Motown Records.
The singer/songwriter will sign up-and-coming talent and mentor new acts as part of his role as senior VP of the artists and repertoire (A&R) division at the label. The hitmaker has also been signed to the firm’s roster following his departure from Def Jam, and will make his Motown debut this summer when he releases his fifth studio album.
In a statement, Ne-Yo says, “I’m honored that I’ve been given such a prestigious title and trusted with such responsibility; terrified because I know that playing this role in the fashion of one of my career role models, Mr. Smokey Robinson – these are big shoes to fill. But trust, I can handle it.”
Senior VP of Motown Ethiopia Habtemariam adds, “In Ne-Yo, we have both a global superstar and arguably one of the best songwriters in music. His presence on the executive team only strengthens our commitment to be the very best in R&B.”
