I just wanna remain transparent. Folks out there without a deal need to know they’re doing everything right just keep at it.”

The St. Charles County Police Department confirmed his death on its Facebook page. The department said that it responded to a medical emergency at the home, about 45 miles west of St. Louis, and that lifesaving measures were unsuccessful.

With songs like “Johnny B. Goode” and “Roll Over Beethoven,” he gave his listeners more than they knew they were getting from jukebox entertainment.

Chance the Rapper gives $1 million to Chicago schools.

Chance the Rapper’s unusual intervention into Chicago Public Schools’ funding crisis took an even more curious turn on Monday. The Grammy-winner presented a $1 million check to city schools and urged Gov. Bruce Rauner to use his executive powers to help the nation’s third-largest district.

The Republican governor, a former venture capitalist, responded by noting his own philanthropy and floating Chicago school funding ideas that would face tough odds in the Democratic-controlled Legislature. Illinois has gone two years without a budget, the longest such stalemate of any state in nearly a century.

The back-and-forth came after a meeting Friday between Rauner and the artist — whose real name is Chancelor Bennett — that left the rapper visibly agitated. Chance asked for the meeting after he won three Grammys last month, including best new artist, and Rauner tweeted congratulations.

The Chicago native stopped at an elementary school near where he grew up to announce the donation to a schools’ foundation, calling himself a “public school kid.” He also accused Rauner of failing to present solutions without “caveats or ultimatums.”

“This isn’t about politics. This isn’t about posturing. This is about taking care of the kids,” he said. “Everybody and their mama knows what’s going on in Chicago. We’re about to enhance the conversation on supporting and funding the education of the kids in Chicago.”

Singer Trey Songz has declined to accept an offer that would have reduced a felony assault charge stemming from a concert appearance in Detroit to a misdemeanor.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Songz, whose real name is Tremaine Neverson, was arraigned via video Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court from Los Angeles.

The newspaper reports that the plea offer remains open. It also would place the 32-year-old Songz on two years’ probation as part of his sentencing.

Songz was charged in December with aggravated assault and assaulting a police officer. Authorities said microphones and speakers were thrown from the Joe Louis Arena stage. A police sergeant also was punched.

Police have said the singer became upset when told to end his performance.

The case is heading to trial.

Erykah Badu’s ‘Baduizm’ Is Still Genre Bending And Defining 20 Years Later.

It’s widely accepted that black women are strong, but seldom, if ever, do black women get to be free. In 1997 with her debut album Baduizm, Erykah Badu courageously taught sistahs how to move in a world sans the oftentimes unrealistic responsibility that comes with being black and woman. Erykah also did this with a sweet yet potent voice from yesteryear. Sounding like a direct heir to Billie Holiday, Ms. Badu, a child of blues, jazz and hip-hop married her influences with a type of sittin-on-the-front-porch-with-yo-granny kind of wisdom to create the genre defining  Baduizm, and thus solidifying our everlasting adoration for this analog girl in a digital world.

Montell Jordan Shares The Story Of How He Transitioned From A R&B Singer To A Pastor

Former R&B singer Montell Jordan still remains a staple artist on everyone’s kickback playlist, even though he’s found a new passion in the church. Making history as Def Jam’s first R&B release, the melody was later followed up by his collaborations with No Limit’s Master P and Silkk the Shocker, and garnered songwriting credits for a countless number of R&B jams, including Deborah Cox’s vocally-challenging “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here.”

But in 2011, Jordan decided the music industry would no longer be his bread and butter, and embraced his calling to pursue a career in ministry. Now, he’s revisiting the story of how he went from the studio to the pulpit on a new episode of Oprah Winfrey’s Where Are The Now?

Culture Minister: No Greens likely for Panorama 2017.

Panorama will be on but the Greens may not be a part of the event in 2017.

Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Arts and Culture told Loop that while she is sure the annual pan event will be on she does not expect the Greens to return.

The Greens, she said, has been Pan Trinbago’s private event.

“I would not expect that Pan Trinbago has what it takes to put on the Greens, I don’t expect it would happen,” she said.

The National Carnival Commission (NCC) in conjunction with Pan Trinbago will execute Panorama 2017.

The Minister said NCC will take responsibility for all finances associated with the event including gate receipts.

This action follows the pan body’s inability to pay its players though the Minister said they were given monies to pay pannists for Panorama 2016.

Reports are that cheques have bounced and following the hospitalisation of Pan Trinbago’s president Keith Diaz, pannists were instructed to refrain from cashing their cheques.

The Minister said they have in discussions with NCC to consider options for paying pannists the $1000 owed to them.

“The situation is a convoluted one. There are a number of players who play for different bands, there are names on record that are not players, the list needs cleaning up. We have asked Pan Trinbago to supply a list of players to see the global debt owed to players, there are some inconsistencies about that.

“The Government and taxpayers have already paid that money so we have to understand what is the debt, who is owed and understand if they are part of the band and how to use the proceeds from Panorama. We may think about advancing (the money) once we can verify how much is owed and take it back out from Panorama 2017. We understand the disappointment of the players,”  said the Minister.

The Minister said based on the body’s financial problems as well as allegations of financial improprieties in other stakeholder bodies such as the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO), the Ministry will be looking at new models going forward.

“The issues really suggest that the model allowing them to take full control of their finances with limited oversight has not been as successful as it supposed to be when it comes to transparency  and accountability,” she said, noting that in Pan Trinbago’s case, NCC has not known how much money is brought in through gate receipts, which could be millions of dollars.

A Love Letter Tupac Wrote In Jail Could Sell For Over $25,000

Today’s topic of conversation concerns Tupac’s handwritten love letter, that could reportedly sell for over $25,000. The letter describes the famed rapper’s adoration for his lover, and will be sold through Goldin Auctions on Jan. 16.

TMZ reports that in the passage, Pac pens statements like, “Ever been tied to a bedpost and licked like a lollipop?” in response to a love letter he received from a woman while he was incarcerated in 1995. The letter goes on to question, “Ever had the taste sucked from your mouth taken thru 12 positions of love making so thoroughly that you are tired to shower or get dressed?”

This is not the first time that something from the “California Love” artist was auctioned for a high price. Back in Oct. 2016, TMZ reported that the late rapper’s pendant was being sold for $125,000. The chain was worn around Pac’s neck when he was shot in 1994. One of Tupac’s family members gave it to Moments In Time owner Gary Zimet to sell, and will receive a majority of the profits.

‘Hidden Figures’ Lands Atop Box Office With $22.8 Million In Ticket Sales

A historic, non-fictional story just found another place in the record books. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hidden Figures landed at the top spot at the box office this past weekend. The film, directed by Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent, The Beneficiary), tells the pivotal story of three African-American mathematicians who played an integral role in NASA’s early space efforts.

The reel raked in $22.8 million after its nationwide debut, knocking out its main competitor, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. After news of Hidden Figures’ massive success, co-star Taraji P. Henson shared her excitement on Instagram.

“I have been told my entire career ‘Black women can’t open films domestically or internationally.’ Well anything is possible,” she wrote. “Most importantly this proves that PEOPLE LIKE GOOD MATERIAL. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GENDER OR RACE. Agreed?”

Gabrielle Union And BET Ink Settlement Over ‘Being Mary Jane’ Dispute

The forthcoming season of Being Mary Jane was met with a hiccup involving the show’s frontrunner, Gabrielle Union, and the hit drama series’ network home, BET. Earlier this year, the award-winning actress reportedly filed a lawsuit against BET on reports that the company planned to mesh seasons four and five for a 20-episode run, which would also decrease Union’s pay despite the lengthy season.

Now, good news is on the horizon for both parties involved. According to Deadline, Union and BET reached a settlement in the breach of contract litigation, but remained tight-lipped on the details of the $3 million lawsuit.

‘Rogue One’ soars to second-best December debut with $155m

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” soared to the top of the weekend box office as expected, scoring the second-best December opening ever with $155 million in estimated ticket sales.

After the biggest Thursday night debut of the year, the intergalactic adventure blasted past industry expectations for a $130 million weekend, according Sunday’s studio estimates. “Rogue One” opened at No. 1 in all markets globally, though it has yet to bow in China and Korea.

“We’re in uncharted territory for December,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box office tracker comScore. “It’s going to be really hard for any movie to catch up to this movie. … This is only the second time a movie has opened this big in December.”

The record-setter was “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the space saga’s seventh installment, which debuted to $247.9 million in the U.S. and Canada last December.

Like “The Force Awakens” did in 2015, “Rogue One” could top the box office for the rest of the year, Dergarabedian said.

Set before the events of the original 1977 “Star Wars,” it stars Felicity Jones and Diego Luna as leaders of a rebel faction that steals plans for its imperial enemy’s master weapon, the Death Star.

“Rogue One” knocked the No. 1 movie for the past three weeks, Disney’s “Moana,” to a distant second with $11.6 million, followed by “Office Christmas Party” with $8.4 million.

The weekend’s other new release, the critically panned Will Smith drama “Collateral Beauty,” opened in fourth place with $7 million.

Yasiin Bey Allowed To Leave South Africa After Apology

Earlier this year, South African authorities arrested Yasiin Bey, the rapper formerly known as Mos Def, when he attempted to leave South Africa carrying something called a World Passport — a document issued by the World Service Authority nonprofit, which advocates for world citizenship. South Africa, where Bey has been living for the past few years, does not recognize the World Passport as a legitimate travel document. And ever since then, Bey hasn’t been allowed to leave the country. But now Reuters reports that Bey has apologized, and South Africa has agreed to drop the charges against him.

According to Reuters, Bey will now be “declared an undesirable person,” and he won’t be allowed to return to South Africa, even though he’s been living in Cape Town since 2013. But the country also won’t be charging him with any crimes. In a statement, the government says, “[He] has unreservedly apologized to the Government of South Africa. The department is satisfied with the apology [and] will withdraw the charges against him.”

Sony Looking To Reboot ‘The Jeffersons’ & ‘Good Times’

We saw it happen with Fuller House, and now it’s looks like Norman Lear’s beloved sitcoms could be getting the same treatment. According to reports, Sony and Lear are in the works of rebooting several classic shows including The Jeffersons and Good Times as miniseries.

While some other resurrected series have picked up where they left off years later, Sony has plans to recreate the classic episodes of the shows with new actors, according to Variety. The shows would still work around the old script, but would just package them as short, six-episode seasons. While this definitely doesn’t sound like the ideal situation for fans who remember every punchline and narrative from the 1970s series, it may make the most sense considering the fact that lead characters such as Sherman Hemsley (he played George Jefferson on The Jeffersons) have passed away.

John Legend Has Some Harsh Words For Kanye West’s Meeting With Donald Trump.

Kanye West may have thought he was doing the country a service by meeting with president-elect Donald Trump to discuss “multicultural issues,” but John Legend isn’t buying it one bit. In an interview with French outlet Clique, the Darkness and Lightartist blasted the rapper for going to the Trump Tower, labelling it a clear publicity stunt.

“I don’t think it’s impossible to talk to [Donald Trump] about issues, but I won’t be used as a publicity stunt. I think Kanye was a publicity stunt,” Legend told the publication on Dec. 14. The singer then expressed his disappointment for West’s earlier comments — pre-mental breakdown — in which the rapper stated that he would have voted for Trump in the general elections.

“I’m pretty disappointed with Kanye that he says he would have voted for Trump. I think Trump has been corrosive, his message has been corrosive to the country,” the singer, who has been a vocal protester of many of the president-elect’s policies, said. “I think the things he’s promised to do have been very concerning for a lot of people, and for Kanye to support that message is very disappointing.” And when the interviewer suggested that West may have had another motive for the meeting, Legend responded: “Whatever’s in his mind, I disagree with him.”

The site reads that Clopton worked with the Konvict Kartel head honcho on a number of songs for the label, but was left hanging when it came to being compensated for a majority of the tracks he helped create with Akon since he began working with him in 2008.

“In the suit, Clopton alleges the cover-up was intentional, so Akon could keep Clopton’s royalties from himself,” TMZ writes. “He accuses Akon of a ‘pattern of racketeering activity.’” Clopton is looking to have his contract with the musician terminated as well as $1 million in damages.

A Netflix spokesperson told The Associated Press on Saturday that the online entertainment company had been in “discussions” with Prince about a series, but that the project did not “come to fruition” before his death in April.

“Why not? You’re so funny,” she told him. Answered Prince: “Maya, I can’t be funny. I have to save the world.”

Ne-Yo Says He’ll Perform at Trump’s Inauguration

Back in October, Ne-Yo was spitting a big game saying he’d be moving to Canada with Drake if Donald Trump was to win the 2016 presidential election.

Now that Trump actually did become the president-elect, Ne-Yo is singing a different tune.

In a new interview with TMZ, the singer said that, in the hypothetical situation of Trump asking him to perform at his inauguration, he’d accept the invitation without hesitation.

“I wouldn’t go because I support Donald Trump, I’d go because it’s a dope party,” he said with a huge grin on his face.

He then adds that he’d go to collect his check and would do so while flipping Trump the bird.

After all, business (and life) must go on.

“ . . . it’s time. I think our democracy has it exactly right: two terms, eight years. It’s enough,” she said. “Because it’s important to have one foot in reality when you have access to this kind of power. The nature of living in the White House is isolating. And I think Barack and I—because we’re kind of stubborn—we’ve maintained some normalcy, mostly because of the age of our kids. I go out to dinner with my girlfriends; I go to Sasha’s games; Barack has coached a little basketball with Sasha’s team. But at the same time, when you can’t walk into CVS?”

“Ciara is pregnant and is so excited to be a mom,” one source told the outlet. “Russell [Wilson] would like to have two to three children. They both would like a big family.”

The news comes as Ciara has been spotted in public recently wearing loose-fitting clothing, which sparked speculation that she had been hiding a baby bump.

The R&B singer and Seattle Seahawks quarterback had famously proclaimed they abstained from having sex before they tied the knot in July.

Ciara is already mom to 2-year-old Future Jr., her son with rapper Future.

If true, the baby news caps a week in which Ciara was also announced as Revlon’s new Global Ambassador.

Mary J. Blige’s ex wants $129K a month in spousal support

Mary J. Blige‘s ex wants her to dig deep into her wallet.

In court docs obtained by TMZ, the singer’s estranged husband, Martin “Kendu” Isaacs, is seeking $129,391 a month in spousal support. While he originally requested spousal support in September, having been exposed to an exuberant lifestyle during their 12-year marriage, he believes Blige, 45, should help him maintain it.

Isaacs claimed he’s been left without a source of income after Blige fired him as her manager, shortly after she filed for divorce in July. Though Blige gave him $35,000 in August, $50,000 in September, as well as $25,000 for attorney fees, Isaacs claimed in the filings to have spent the cash to “secure new living accommodations,” per the Daily Mail.

Isaacs wants Blige to cover the cost of an $8,000 private chef, a $3,200 personal trainer, as well as the $5,000 he gives to his parents per month. He also requested an additional $100,000 for legal costs.

Though the couple signed a prenup two days before their December 2003 wedding, Isaacs believes the document is invalid as he did not have a lawyer present.

Reps for Blige did not immediately return a request for comment.
